Jewellery Care Guide
A little everyday care goes a long way. Follow these simple tips to help keep your favourite jewellery looking its best.
Everyday care
Put your jewellery on after applying perfume, lotions and other beauty products. Avoid direct contact with household cleaners and harsh chemicals.
Unless the individual product's care instructions say otherwise, remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. This helps reduce exposure to moisture and accidental snags.
Cleaning your jewellery
Gently wipe your jewellery with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth after wearing it. Check the product's material and care instructions before using any cleaning solution.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, stiff brushes and toothpaste. Do not use polishing treatments or ultrasonic cleaners unless they are suitable for the specific metal, plating and stones in your piece.
Storing your favourites
Store jewellery in a dry place, away from humidity and direct sunlight. Keep pieces separately in soft pouches or a lined jewellery box to help prevent scratches and tangling. Fasten necklace chains before storing them.
Handle with care
Open and close clasps gently, and avoid pulling on chains or bending delicate details. Check fastenings occasionally, and stop wearing a piece if a clasp or setting feels loose.
A note on piercing jewellery
This guide covers jewellery care, not piercing aftercare. For a new or healing piercing, follow your professional piercer's advice before removing or changing jewellery.
Not sure what your piece needs?
Check its product description for material-specific details, or get in touch with By Effie with the name of your piece. Different materials and finishes need different care, so it is always worth checking first.
